1. COVID-19 Cases Rise Again: Over 750 New Infections in a Week
India has reported 752 new COVID-19 cases in the past week, pushing the active caseload to over 1,000. Kerala remains the most affected state with 335 new cases, while Karnataka reported 37 new infections, 35 of which were in Bengaluru. The emergence of two new sub-variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, has prompted health authorities to urge vigilance.
2. Gaurav Gogoi Appointed Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President
In a major move ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the Congress party has appointed Gaurav Gogoi as the new president of Assam PCC. Gaurav, son of late CM Tarun Gogoi, recently defeated BJP’s Topon Kumar Gogoi in the Jorhat seat and is expected to be the face of Congress in the Ahom belt.
3. Guwahati CCTV Surveillance Project Reaches 45% Completion
The Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) is making fast progress on its city-wide CCTV surveillance project. So far, 100 cameras are functional, and cantilever poles have been installed in over 650 locations including Khanapara, Maligaon, and Chandrapur. The project aims to improve safety and traffic monitoring, and is expected to complete by September 2025.
4. Assam CM Reviews Satellite Township Projects
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the Barduar satellite township project and ordered speedy construction of the Palasbari township. The government aims to develop modern housing and commercial zones to reduce congestion in Guwahati.
